On October 16, 2016, Yuong Sang Presbyterian Church held an inauguration service for Rev. Greg Paek, the second senior pastor in their over thirty-year history. Yuong Sang Presbyterian Church has a long and rich history with Westminster Theological Seminary. The church's first senior pastor, Rev. Yong Gol Lee, received his MAR and DMin from Westminster in the early years of his ministry, after receiving his MDiv from Chongshin Seminary in South Korea. After faithfully serving the church for over 30 years, Rev. Lee announced his retirement earlier this year. Upon Rev. Lee’s retirement, Yuong Sang Church announced that Rev. Greg Paek, who received his DMin from Westminster in 1986, would be stepping into the role of senior pastor to lead the congregation of approximately 1,200.
During the inauguration service, the church generously presented a $300,000 gift to Dr. Peter A. Lillback, president of Westminster Theological Seminary. This gift is intended to act as seed capital for building new residence halls anticipated in the seminary’s campus plan project. One of these residence halls, when completed, will contain an area dedicated as "Yuong Sang Hall," to commemorate the church and its relationship with the seminary. The history of Yuong Sang Church will be displayed in the residence hall, highlighting the church’s significant presence within the Korean community in Philadelphia and its global presence in worldwide missions.
As a church that ministers both locally and internationally, Yuong Sang Presbyterian Church provides a glimpse into the mission of Westminster: to train specialists in the Bible to proclaim the whole counsel of God for Christ and His global church. Westminster is sincerely appreciative of the opportunity to develop a deeper relationship with Yuong Sang Church and the Korean community.
