As the Lord Enables

Bridge

An alumnus on a recent campus visit stopped me in the hallway of Machen and said, "Hey, I read the magazine, wish I could do more to help." He was referring to the very clear and compelling presentation of the seminary's financial need in the recent Westminster Today and his own limited ability to respond financially. I suggested a couple of ways he could actually help, which seemed to turn a light bulb on for him and got me thinking that perhaps other alumni might appreciate hearing some alternative ways they might step into the breach with us.

One suggestion I give to alumni who want to help the seminary financially is to communicate the needs of the seminary to people in your circle of ministry who may have the desire and resources to give. Those who have benefited from your ministry have benefited from a Westminster education. Are there people who have been influenced by your ministry who you might ask to consider the needs of the institution that gave you the tools to serve them?

Another suggestion that we now make to all of our graduating students is to give a little this year and make a commitment to increase, as the Lord enables you, each year. We received this idea from an alumnus who graduated over 50 years ago and began the practice when he graduated. He is now contributing substantially every year. If you've felt that you can't do what you'd like, have you considered just doing what you can, and increase that each year as the Lord enables you?

One last suggestion is to ask your church to consider contributing to the seminary that equipped you for your ministry to them. Some churches are able to include Westminster in their missions budget. Perhaps others might consider a one-time offering where they contribute to the multiplication of workers for the harvest, in the tradition of one who now feeds their soul.

As I conclude, I invite you to watch this excerpt from a fellow alumnus where he explains why he is compelled to contribute to Westminster. I'm sure that his thoughts will mirror your own in many ways: Dustyn Eudaly (M.Div. '02)

As I entered the office for alumni support, I promised that we would be about supporting you in ministry before asking you to support us. I make this appeal to you now only because, as the Westminster Today article put it, we are in a battle for our survival. So, above all else, we ask that you would pray with and for us that our God might supply all our needs so that we would be resourced to equip many more new generations of kingdom workers to proclaim God's unchanging Word to a changing world.

Partnering with you for kingdom purposes,
