RAR

On Sept 29th and 30th Westminster’s current Regional Alumni Representatives (RARs) met on the seminary campus to discuss the RAR role and how we can best serve alumni.

Our summit began with Dr. Tim Witmer presenting the findings of the Lilly endowed study, Sustaining Pastoral Excellence, in which Westminster participated from 2004-2008. We spent several profitable hours the next day planning how the fruit of that study might be employed to strengthen Westminster alumni in their ministries. We also sharpened our understanding of how each RAR might be able to serve their region. The plan is for each one to provide a personal contact for Westminster events and recruitment opportunities in their area. The RARs will also attend the May meeting of the Board of Trustees to provide an ear and a voice for our alumni community.

One highlight of our time together was a tour of campus usually given to prospective students. Since each RAR may be speaking with prospective students in their region, director of admissions Jonathan Brack guided us through the “tour of theological ideas” which introduces interested guests to Westminster’s history and theological heritage.  The entire group was enthusiastic about how valuable this was as a reminder of what God has done and is doing through our seminary, and of how the education we offer is unique and vital for the future of the Church.

Note from the President

Dr. Peter Lillback

Highest MDiv enrollment ever at Westminster’s Philadelphia campus

Westminster is pleased to report that its MDiv enrollment, at 243, is the highest number ever in the history of its Philadelphia campus, surpassing the 220 high mark of 2006. This comes after discontinuing campus locations in Dallas and NYC. We are blessed with this growth but realize it stretches us in terms of space, faculty and other needs. We ask that you stand with us as we continue to serve our core program.

The Growth of Westminster's Library

Westminster's Montgomery Library now holds more than 143,000 volumes and provides access to many electronic resources.  However, it had humble beginnings.  Click "FULL STORY" for an article by Rev. Arthur Kuschke from the March, 1958 Alumni Bulletin which recounts some of the library's early history.

"It is notorious in many other institutions that the faculty are of small value in building up a library.  The matter has been just the reverse at Westminster."

Join the staff of Montgomery library this month as we continue to celebrate Theological Libraries Month.

Publisher Description: Social justice and mission are hot topics today: there's a wonderful resurgence of motivated Christians passionate about spreading the gospel and caring for the needs of others. But in our zeal to get sharing and serving, many are unclear on gospel and mission. Yes, we are called to spend ourselves for the sake of others, but what is the church’s unique priority as it engages the world?

DeYoung and Gilbert write to help Christians “articulate and live out their views on the mission of the church in ways that are theologically faithful, exegetically careful, and personally sustainable.” Looking at the Bible’s teaching on evangelism, social justice, and shalom, they explore the what, why, and how of the church’s mission. From defining “mission”, to examining key passages on social justice and their application, to setting our efforts in the context of God’s rule, DeYoung and Gilbert bring a wise, studied perspective to the missional conversation.

Readers in all spheres of ministry will grow in their understanding of the mission of the church and gain a renewed sense of urgency for Jesus’ call to preach the Word and make disciples.
