Astonishing Access

Crowds outside Buckingham Palace

The recent royal wedding was filled with grand images that mesmerized the world. One struck me in particular. The cameras followed the sea of spectators on their jubilant march to Buckingham Palace where they crushed against the great gates to catch a glimpse of the royal couple when they emerged on a balcony. As an overhead camera framed the multitude and the palace in one shot, we saw the broad pristine courtyard that separated the people, on the outside of the gates, from the (future) king. The themes of Ephesians 2:11-22 sprang to mind. In Christ, the glorious sovereign of heaven and earth has removed the barriers that keep the peoples from his presence. Through Christ, we are not kept at an adoring distance, but have astonishing access to his throne to behold his glory and plead our need.

Familiarity with the benefits of the gospel can dull the luster of its benefits. I encourage you to find time in this month to savor the wonder of restored communion with God. Imagine the thrill members of the wedding mass would have felt had those gates suddenly been opened to them. They surely would not have hesitated to accept the access they had been granted. How much more joy and urgency could characterize our privilege of free access to the presence of the one who reigns on high and who raises and removes all earthly powers. Particularly as many of you carry the burdens of peoples God has called you to lead lets embrace the Savior’s blood bought invitation to “with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Heb. 4:16)

Founders of Westminster

Reformed Forum

Paul Woolley, Ned B. Stonehouse, and Cornelius van Til

On the Reformed Forum podcast, Historia Ecclesia, Westminster MDiv student Jonathan Brack discusses some of the key founders of Westminster Theological Seminary.  Westminster was founded in 1929 as a result of the reorganization of Princeton Seminary which Machen thought would result in a more inclusive seminary and the liberal elements in the church having more influence. J. Gresham Machen and other professors from Princeton Seminary founded Westminster in an attempt to carry on the rich Reformed tradition of Princeton.

A World of Riches

Rev. Dr. David B. Garner

Dr. David Garner (associate professor of systematic theology) discusses the issue of using familial language for God, specifically adoption.  Read the whole article at the Reformation21 website.

"Challenges to the familial cast to the Gospel are not new and they are not only missiological. At various points since the Reformation, the familial thrust of the Gospel has found itself virtually orphaned....With the need to articulate and defend the exclusively forensic character of justification against Roman synergy and infusion, the Reformers rightly trumpeted alien imputed righteousness."

An Adoption Story

  Rev. Charlie Abbate

There was a Girl: Fifteen Years Old

Rev. Charlie Abbate (pictured; M.Div., '09) writes about his experience in adoption, comparing it to our adoption as children of God.

This blog is courtesy of Reformation21

"'Well what's going to happen to her?' I asked.  'You know what'll happen to her,' my wife answered back.  'Then we're going to host this girl.'  At that moment, my wife and I took a step in faith that resulted in us adopting a 15 year old girl from Russia.  And the timing couldn't have been worse."

Dr. Beale, who recently spoke at the Gheens Lectureship, was featured in the magazine Towers in the section "3 Questions with..."

"Christians need to plant themselves in the midst of the redemptive-historical story, not thinking they’re living after it and hearing about it."

Accreditation Survey

Westminster Theological Seminary is in the process of an institutional Self-Study, the decennial affirmation of accreditation for the Association of Theological Schools, the national accreditation agency for theological schools in the United States and Canada. The purpose of the Self-Study is to advance Westminster’s self-understanding and self-improvement. This process is used to deepen our understanding of how well our programs and services accomplish our mission and goals and meet the accreditation standards.

In preparation for the visiting committee and in response to the ATS Policy Manual, Westminster is inviting comment in writing concerning Westminster’s qualifications for accreditation. These comments will be made available to the visiting committee.

What does it take for lasting change to take root in your life?

If you've ever tried, failed, and wondered why, you need How People Change. This book explains the biblical pattern for change in a clear, practical way that you can apply to the challenges of daily life. A changed heart is the bright promise of the gospel. When the Bible talks about the gift of a new heart, it doesn't mean a heart that is immediately perfected, but a heart that is capable of being changed. Jesus' work on the cross targets our hearts, our core desires and motivations, and when our hearts change, our behavior changes. But change involves more than a biblical formula: You will see how God is at work to make you the person you were created to be. That powerful, loving, redemptive relationship is at the heart of all positive change you experience.
