Why We Do What We Do

Student Chapel

Once in a while, someone gives you a message that reminds you why you do what you do. Recently a student sent me a note describing the impact one of his preaching classes has had on his life. He wrote, “The discipline of studying and meditating on a part of God’s Word in the preparation of preaching was so good for my heart. I think that discipline has been the strongest confirmation in my calling to the ministry. Not because I was good at it but because I want to do that for the rest of my life, to labor to know God through his Word and to share that with the people of the God. I want to be good at it, to grow in humility, wisdom, love, and power.”

What I find so encouraging about this student’s note is that it’s not the public presentation in front of his class (that part comes quite easily to him) but the private labor, the hard work, of rightly dividing the truth and the desire for excellence for the sake of God’s people that are compelling him to ministry. He’s sensing the call to stewardship and service rather than seeking stardom. This is what we mean when we say that Westminster exists to form Christian leaders to proclaim the whole counsel of God to a changing world. This is why we do what we do.

Gospel Ministry in Cameroon

Ndiamanting

In a recent visit to the Westminster campus Rev. Daniel Ndiamanting (’02) reported that his vision for a Christian Comprehensive Vocational Academy in Cameroon “was born in room 6” of Van Til hall. While a student at the seminary Daniel asked the Lord “how can I extensively impact Cameroon?” The outcome of that prayer was the vision for a vocational school that would teach Cameroonian young people employable skills and ethical behavior based on the conviction that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Progress has already been made toward the realization of the vision through the donation of land for the school. If you would like to know more about Daniel’s mission you can visit www.cvai.org or call 215-324-2260.

NEW Book by Student

Letters to Charles

"If you believe in Christian apologetics and know some theory, but long to know what it should look like in practice, an excellent place to begin is Jomo K. Johnson’s Letters to Charles. This lively imagined correspondence from a believer to an atheist covers everything from Chinese philosophy to the First Amendment to human psychology. It even has Van Til writing to C. S. Lewis and Paul dealing with Islam! All of it models a defense of the faith from the perspective of 1 Peter 3:15: 'Always be ready.'  This timely volume will help us all be better prepared."
- Dr. William Edgar, Professor of Apologetics

In each chapter author Dr. Carl R. Trueman, professor of Church History and Historical Theology, gives an account of the problem, examines one or more classic examples of it, and suggests either a solution or an approach that will bear fruit.

Publisher Review:
In this solid evangelical commentary on John's Gospel, a respected Scripture expositor makes clear the flow of the text, engages a small but representative part of the massive secondary literature on John, shows how the Fourth Gospel contributes to biblical and systematic theology, and offers a consistent exposition of John as a evangelistic Gospel. The comprehensive introduction treats such matters as the authenticity, authorship, purpose, and structure of the Gospel.

"Carson has made the text of John come alive with historical, linguistic, and theological insight that is readily accessible both to the theologian and the aware layperson . . . Fresh, colorful, readable, and up to date.
