A Special Appeal from the President

Dr. Peter Lillback

We are very grateful at Westminster for the many gracious gifts of our Lord!  You, to be sure, are one of those divine blessings.  To know that God has given to Westminster alumni who have been taught the glorious truths of Christ and His infallible Word is a deep encouragement to me and to all of us who serve here.

Included among the many good gifts of our Father to His Westminster family:

  • This year saw the largest incoming MDiv Class in the history of our seminary.
  • Two years of record giving to Westminster.
  • The seminary has paid in full its operational indebtedness that it had carried for years.
  • The rebuilding of the entire infrastructure of our aging campus.
  • Very positive reports of our accreditation visitation teams from Middle States and ATS.
  • The endowing of two new faculty chairs: The Stephen Tong Chair of Reformed Theology and The Paul Woolley Chair of Church History.
  • Opportunities to endow two additional chairs in the coming months.
  • The positive report given on campus a few weeks ago from former Westminster President Sam Logan, head of World Reformed Fellowship, of which Westminster is a member.

These kind providences have sustained us in the very difficult economic years through which we have just passed.  Now, we are trusting that the giving of God’s people will continue to sustain the gospel ministry of Westminster in what is very possibly the most challenging giving season the Seminary has faced for decades.

If I can speak with full candor, our giving this year is substantially lower at this point in our fiscal year than I have ever seen.

This means that we could likely conclude this academic year having spent our hard-won reserves. For reasons of good stewardship and institutional sustainability, we must not operate the seminary from a position of indebtedness or by misuse of our scarce resources.

We humbly ask that you would prayerfully consider a significant gift to the work of Westminster at this time of our great need.  Your investment will enable us to continue our Christ-centered ministry that touches the world and will help preserve the positive momentum that Westminster has achieved in the last two years.  Would you please pray for us?  Can you please help us today with a much needed investment in our Kingdom work?

Thanks so very much for your gracious and faith-filled consideration of Westminster’s needs today!

Sincerely in Christ’s Service,

Peter Lillback, President of Westminster Seminary

Divine Condescension and the Attributes of God

Rev. Dr. K. Scott Oliphint, professor of apologetics and systematic theology, recently published a new book, God with Us: Divine Condescension and the Attributes of God.

"For the Christian mind seeking to understand the nature of God, one fundamental paradox poses a philosophical stumbling block: how can God be both a wholly independent, eternal being yet also an interactive force in the temporal plane of creation?"

Unimaginable?

Thoughts on the State College Scandal, by Rev. Dr. William Edgar

The first public reactions to the sex abuse scandal at State college are telling. Joe Paterno, record holder for the most winning seasons, a coach’s coach, masterful fund-raiser, father figure to hundreds, went down in disgrace. Students were outraged, demonstrating through the night raising “We love you Joe” posters. State College, an American icon, known for producing scholar athletes, roiled by Sandusky accusation. So let’s make the laws clearer. What about college football?

Hospitality for Christ

Jason Pickard

Jason Pickard (MDiv '10), campus minister for RUF-International at Texas A&M University

"On campus I am basically like a chaplain for international students. I seek serve internationals in any way that I can. Sometimes this means simply welcoming students and helping them to understand how things work in Aggieland (what we call College Station).

"A large part of what we do, and one of RUF-International’s core values, is hospitality."

Rev. Dr. Greg Beale, professor of New Testament and biblical theology has published a new work in biblical studies, A New Testament Biblical Theology.

Publisher's Description:
In this comprehensive exposition, a leading New Testament scholar explores the unfolding theological unity of the entire Bible from the vantage point of the New Testament. G. K. Beale, co-editor of the award-winning Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament, examines how the New Testament storyline relates to and develops the Old Testament storyline. Beale argues that every major concept of the New Testament is a development of a concept from the Old and is to be understood as a facet of the inauguration of the latter-day new creation and kingdom. Offering extensive interaction between the two testaments, this volume helps readers see the unifying conceptual threads of the Old Testament and how those threads are woven together in Christ. This major work will be valued by students of the New Testament and pastors alike.
