8.5 Application of Westminster Scholarships and External Aid

Westminster Scholarships and External Aid

Westminster scholarships will be applied to the student’s account so long as the student remains within the eligibility requirements specified in the award letter. If a student has been awarded a need-based Westminster scholarship and also has received external aid, the Westminster scholarship will be applied to the student’s account last and any excess will not be refunded to the student.  Under no circumstances will the Seminary pay out Westminster scholarships in excess of the student’s outstanding balance.  In the illustration below, assume that Westminster has awarded the student a $2,000 Westminster scholarship:

Westminster Scholarship  and Tuition Work Program*

If a student has been awarded a Westminster scholarship and is participating in the tuition work program and has more than enough credit between the two to cover the current semester tuition charges, the tuition work credit will not reduce the Westminster scholarship as this is considered wages that have been taxed and earned by the student. However, since both Westminster Scholarships and tuition work compensation can only be used toward tuition, the credit balance must remain on the student’s account and will carry forward to future semesters.

External Aid and Tuition Work Program*

If a student has received external aid and is participating in the tuition work program and has more than enough credit between the two to cover the current semester tuition charges, then the credit balance will remain on the student’s account as both the external aid and tuition work credit must be used for tuition.

However, if the particular aid that a student is receiving stipulates that the student may use it on tuition, books, living expenses, and other needs, then the student may receive a refund of the credit balance, not to exceed the amount of the external aid.

Westminster Scholarship, External Aid and Tuition Work Program*

If a student has been awarded a need-based Westminster Scholarship, has received external aid and is participating in the tuition work program, and has more than enough credit to cover the current semester tuition charges, then the external aid will be applied first and the Westminster scholarship applied second. At this point, if there is a credit balance, the Westminster scholarship will be reduced by the credit amount. Then, the tuition work credit will be added last. The credit balance will carry forward to be applied to future semesters. Please see the illustration below:

Scenario 1

Tuition Charge $6,000.00
External Aid $(2,500.00)
Westminster Scholarship  $(1,500.00)
Tuition Work Compensation  $(3,000.00)
Total $(1,000.00) credit

*The credit will carry forward to future semesters

Scenario 2

Tuition Charge $6,000.00
External Aid $(5,000.00)
Westminster Scholarship  $(1,500.00)
Tuition Work Compensation  $(1,000.00)
Total $(1,500) credit

*Because the total of the external aid and WTS scholarship exceed the tuition charge, the WTS scholarship will be reduced accordingly

Scenario 2 (Adjusted)

Tuition Charge $6,000.00
External Aid $(5,000.00)
Westminster Scholarship $(1,000.00)
Tuition Work Compensation  $(1,000.00)
Total $(1,000.00) credit

*The credit will carry forward to future semesters

External Aid Designated for Non-Tuition purposes

If external aid is received for a particular student and is designated exclusively for a non-tuition expense such as books or living expenses, then the full amount of the aid will be given to the student and there will be no reduction of his/her Westminster scholarship (if applicable).

Appeals

If a student wishes to appeal the reduction of WTS aid, they may submit an appeal letter to the Financial Aid office to be considered by the Scholarship Committee.

*The Tuition Work Program was discontinued.
